Lesson 1: INTRODUCTION TO COACHING
Etymologically, the English term “coach” is derived from a medium of transport that traces its origins to the Hungarian word kocsi meaning “carriage” that was named after the village where it was first made. The first use of the term coaching to mean an instructor or trainer arose around 1830 in Oxford University slang for a tutor who “carries” a student through an exam. Coaching thus has been used in language to describe the process used to transport people from where they are, to where they want to be. The first use of the term in relation to sports came in 1861.

Lesson 2: THE POWER OF VISUALIZATION
Visualization is a technique that has been in use for many years, but it only started to come to the attention of popular media in the 1970s and 1980s. Since that time, its use has expanded to all areas of life. Athletes like Jack Nicklaus use it to excel in their sports. Actors like Will Smith use it to imagine success not yet achieved. On a less grand level, people use visualization to see and achieve goals such as planning the perfect wedding or acing an interview.

Lesson 3: COACH – CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS
The single factor most vital to successful outcomes in executive coaching is the quality of the relationship between coach and client. In her article in this series last month, Ina Smith stressed that executive coaching is quite different from ‘training coaching’ that focuses on the development of skills or knowledge. What, then, can the executive coach offer? What can a client reasonably expect of his coach, and what skills or knowledge should the coach have in order to secure the best possible outcome for his client? Ina has already identified many of these. However, even the coach with the best “kitbag” of skills, knowledge and business experience will not procure the best outcome for his client unless he is able to establish and build a good relationship.

Lesson 4: LIFE COACHING & PERSONAL COACHING
Personal coaching or ‘life coaching’ as it is commonly described and promoted is a quite recent area of learning and development. Life coaching can be effective in many situations, for example in helping a person’s career direction and development, or for personal fulfillment or life change more generally. Life coaching, or becoming a personal coach is also a career opportunity in itself that interests many people from a wide variety of backgrounds. In recent years a big industry has grown under the heading of ‘life coaching’. For this reason the term ‘life coaching’ appears widely in related marketing and publicity, which can create a perception that ‘life coaching’ is in some way quite different from other forms of personal coaching.

Lesson 5: BUSINESS MANAGEMENT COACHING TIPS & STRATEGIES
Want to find out about the essential components of a coaching relationship? Executives, managers, and others interested in career growth and development increasingly turn to a business coach for a personally tailored development process. Human Resources staff and managers need to get on board as coaches or miss this exciting opportunity to influence the next evolution of your organization’s management potential. According to Winston Connor, formerly an HR Vice President and currently an executive coach, “Coaching is a different delivery system for training, since training, especially with long term managers and people who are further along in their careers, is not working.

Lesson 6: PROFESSIONAL COACHING
ICF defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential, which is particularly important in today’s uncertain and complex environment. Coaches honor the client as the expert in his or her life and work and believe every client is creative, resourceful and whole.

Lesson 8: SELF-COACHING WITH POSITIVE THINKING
Self-coaching is when you take the initiative in creating positive changes in your life without needing expensive one-to-one intervention from a life coach, counsellor, psychologist or other helping professional. Lesson 9: THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING
Many people say things like, “I try to think positive, but I am overwhelmed by negativity.” Many people have concluded that either positive thinking doesn’t work, or they are somehow not trying hard enough. The fact is, positive thinking can be a very effective tool in the right circumstances, but it has to be done the right way and at the right time. But before I get into that, I want to get off on the right foot and say it is best to consider positive thinking as self-coaching. It’s a more accurate description of what you’re trying to do, and it is the name researchers use when they try to determine if self-coaching makes any difference. And they’ve discovered it does.

Lesson 10: THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF COACHING
The reputation of coaching is growing along with the use of the concept – and coaching is becoming increasingly associated with modern recognized requirements for success in life, work, business and organizations, notably the qualities of excellence, integrity, humanity and facilitative learning (as distinct from traditional ‘training’). Coaching is increasingly sub-dividing into specialist and new applications.
